It is the beginning of a journey that commences on the West Coast of the USA and continues to several other places. Whether it's through the desert, high mountains or along the coast, we don't drive to get from point A to B. We drive to drive. Welcome to the first AHEAD road trip.

The never-ending road stretches across a barren desert landscape, extending all the way to the shimmering horizon. We make our way down to Death Valley's only petrol station. Here, we meet the mechanic R. Fairby, who checks and refuels the vehicles before we cross the harsh desert. In a place that is characterized by such unbelievable heat and aridity, it's best to be prepared for everything. The drive takes you through surreal locations that look as unreal as their names suggest: Devils Golf Course, Artists Palette and Mesquite Sand Dunes, just to name a few. In the evening, the setting sun throws its last light into the valley, while the two parked protagonists crackle quietly to themselves.

The temperatures are dropping noticeably – it is now time for us to close the top of the 911 Cabriolet. We work our way higher and higher over mountain passes, and the increasing snow forces us to put on snow chains. This is the only way we will manage to reach our accommodation at June Lake, located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. When we arrive at the log cabins surrounded by snow-covered pine trees, the eventful day comes to an end, and a clear, starry sky sparkles above us. The -20 degree temperatures ensure that our two vehicles are covered with a layer of ice crystals.

On the veranda overlooking the sea, we enjoy a welcome change of scenery after days in the desert. We drive along the coast to Los Angeles on Highway 1. The view of the ocean becomes visible, followed by one bay after the other where surfers dare to ride the waves. As the sun sets behind the lifeguard post, we are briefly reminded of "Baywatch." We enjoy one last drive on the highway towards downtown Los Angeles. Upon arriving at the elevated park of the Griffith Observatory, we are greeted with the flickering sea of city lights at our feet.
